Become a Referee

The Kansas State Referee Committee offers many courses in Kansas to help you become certified as a USSF referee. Through hard work in the classroom, good fitness, and a spirit of dedication and committment, you can join the ranks of many officials both young and young at heart that have helped better the game of soccer through quality officiating.

Certification

It is important to note that this certification is for United States Soccer Federation (USSF) matches ONLY. If you are looking for a different organization, choose from this list:

Choose a USSF Course

USSF uses grade levels to indicate what progress you have made as a referee. USSF grade levels have nothing to do with your grade in school. Any person at any age who is able to meet the requirements of the course will be certified. Parents should consider that children under 12 will likely have difficulty with the reading and with the exam, however persons of any age may take the course and attempt to achieve certification.

Achieving certification does not guarantee a referee will be assigned games. You will be an independent contractor and may contract with leagues as you see fit. It will be up the league to determine whether to use you or not. We suggest you contact leagues in your area to learn their requirements in addition to USSF certification.

There are three courses for new referees. Each has different requirements and result in different levels of certification. Read the descriptions below and choose the course that best meets your needs below:

OUTDOOR

  • Recreational Referee Clinic (Grade 9)
    • Appopriate for recreational youth games (U-14 and below) games only
    • 9 1/2 hour course held over 2 days (must attend all 9 1/2 hours)
    • Recreational referee exam

To upgrade from a Grade 9 to a Grade 8 in a later year, one must take the Entry Level Clinic, which is a 16 hour course.

  • Entry Level Clinic (Grade 8)
    • Any USSF Sanctioned match, competitive or recreational at any age level
    • 2 day course (must attend all 16 hours)
    • Entry level soccer referee exam

Note: There is no pre-requisite for the Grade 8 course. You can take the Entry Level Clinic without having been previously certified as a Grade 9 referee.
